Physics 623, Spring 1997, Dr. Yakovenko
Students' Evaluations
- The do-it-yourself method for this course was good, but
occasionally it would have been nice to have a formal lecture at the
beginning of a topic (i.e. scattering). This is the best course I have
taken at this university.
Comment #17 (Textbook): It might be time to take the plunge and use a
different textbook, especially w/ so many exercises not coming from
Shankar.
- Yakovenko is an excellent teacher with great knowledge of Quantum
Mechanics. I like the clever way he presents the material and the way
he solves the problems. I also like the fact that he reccomends the
book of Landau which is excellent. He is the best teacher of Quantum
Mechanics I’ve ever had.
Comment #17 (Textbook): I think that Shankar’s book is not for
graduate course.
- Dr. Yakovenko is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about all aspects of
problem-solving of Theorems in Quantum Mechanics, is well aware of
literature & carefully gives references.
[A class with Dr. Yakovenko is ideal for those who have previous good
exposure of want to learn problem-solving [i.e. Condensed Matter--] -
none of these, however suit me]. Still, I would prefer Landau as the
text book.
Dr. Yako. worked very hard & with great zeal to make us aware of all
relevant aspects. The exercises were extremely insightful. When so
much material is to be covered, the method he chose is certainly the
best one. PS: web site was a great help.
Comment #3 (Grading): I would still like my grade to depend on a TEST.
Comment #7 (Instructor's knowledge): Very well aware - - -
Comment #18 (Expected grade): The grade should depend on EXAMS not
homework.
- Prof. Yakovenko is a very good teacher. I learned a lot expecially
speaking with him out of class. He is very kind, and has always time
of students. However, he sometimes "messes" up on the board, and the
only one thing I don’t like is that he neglects constants. Sometimes
it would be nice to see everything on the blackboard. But, I’m
totally satisfied with this course.
Comment #17 (Textbook): I don’t like Shankar that much.
- All problem sets were available online on the instructor’s webpage.
There was no problem to hand in Homework late lower pressure. Very
helpful office hours.
- Very good course arrangement, but you need to do something better
about the quantum field part. Better text suggestions perhaps
Comment #12 (Exams): only final exam & homework
Comment #17 (Textbook): an entire library was necessary to do
assignments
- Instructor was alway readily available for help outside of class.
Comment (Exams)#12: NA no exams
Comment #13 (Feedback): NA TA corrected work
- I liked the format of the course, but found it difficult to put
enough time in before the lecture to get all that I could have out of
the course
Comment #16 (Instructor's out of class help): N/A
Comment #19 (Your status): 1st year Grad
- Great HW sets. I learned a lot from them.
Griffith’s QM text was a great supplement, as was Landau & Lifshitz.
Comment #2 (Instructor's teaching): The actual presentation of
material is sketchy by design
Comment #10 (Instructor's answering): Completeness: A ; clarity:
B-/C+
Comment #12 (Exams): ? (only final)
- I enjoyed the structure of the course, being instead of lectures,
exposition of assigned problems.
Handwriting was not perfect, but it was legible.
