Building a generator

The apparatus we used to build a motor in on of the Tutorials* is shown in the figure at the right. This device can also be used to build a generator that will produce a voltage.

  1. Explain the setup that one would use to do this and explain how it works.
  2. Estimate the maximum voltage that would be produced if you cranked the generator by hand.
(Hint: As a comparison for estimating the strength of the bar magnet, the earth's magnetic field at our location is about 0.4 G.)
