Office hour Th 10 to 11 AM, and by appointment.

We will divide the lecture roughly by topics; either of us will be available for questions on any of the course topics.

Texts:
            1) L. C. Allen and J. H. Eberly, "Optical Resonance and Two-level Atoms", Dover
            2) Rodney Loudon, "The Quantum Theory of Light"
, 3rd Edition, Oxford

            Recommended:

            W. Demtroder, "Laser Spectroscopy," Springer

Homework:

Homework will consist of one problem assigned each Thursday, due the following Thursday. No late homework accepted.

Mid term:

The mid-term exam will be a take-home exam, given on 23 Oct.11. and due on by 5:00 PM on 28 Oct.

Final exam:

Instead of a final exam, you will select an article in AMO physics, published in Physical Review Letters, Physical Review A, Science, Nature, or JOSA B since January 2003.  A suggested list of papers will be supplied, and your selection will be due on 20 Nov.  You will write a critical review of the paper, as if you had been asked to do so by a journal (see APS website for information).  The review will be due on 16 Dec.

Grades:

Homework: 40%, Mid-term: 30%, Final project: 30%
