Course Title:            Fundamentals of Physics II (4 credits)

Textbook:            College Physics, Vol. 2, Serway and Faughn (Thomson), 7th Edition

Physics 122 Laboratory Manual, Fall 2008 Edition

Prerequisite:            Phys 121 or equivalent

Course Description:  This is the second part of a two-semester course in general physics.  The subjects covered will be electricity and magnetism, optics, and atomic and nuclear physics.  Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and elementary geometry is required.  The course will stress both a qualitative and a quantitative understanding of physical phenomena as well as problem solving.

Course Webpage:            http://www.physics.umd.edu/courses/Phys122/Paik/index.html

Lectures:          MW 6:30-7:45 p.m., Room Phys. 0405

Homework:      Homework will be assigned at the beginning of each chapter and will be due at the beginning of the following chapter.  The purpose of the homework is to insure that you are keeping up with the course material and to help you measure your understanding of the material.  Selected problems of each homework will be graded.  Solutions to the homework will be posted on the course webpage.  The worst 3 homework scores will be dropped.  Late homework will not be accepted.

Quizzes:            Each week there will be a quiz during the lecture.  Each quiz will consist of one problem based on the previous week’s homework assignment.  The best 10 quiz scores will be summed to determine your total score for the quizzes.  There will be no makeup quizzes.

Laboratories:    Experiments are a very important part of this course.  All the labs must be completed in order to pass the course.  There will be makeup sessions in which a missed experiment can be performed.  Experiments must be completed during the two-hour laboratory session.  Therefore, to assure efficient use of the limited time, it is essential that you read the lab manual beforehand.  Lab reports must be turned in to your TA at the beginning of or before the next lab period.  Late reports will not be accepted.

Exams:             There will be three midterm exams and a final.  The midterms will be given during lecture periods.  The best two out of the three midterms will count toward your course grade.  The final exam will be given at 6:30-8:30 p.m., Dec. 15 (Mon), in Room Phys. 0405.  There will be no makeup exams.

Grading:           Your grade for the course will be based on the following percentages:

Homework: 10%, Quizzes: 20%, Laboratories: 20%, Midterms: 30%, Final: 20%

Tips:                 (1) In order to get the most out of lectures, read the book before the material is covered in the class.  You will be able to follow the lectures much better if you come with some general understanding of what to expect and with some specific questions on what you do not understand.  It is a very bad idea to cut classes.

(2) Do all the homework on time so that you get good grades on the quizzes and the exams.  Try to do all the problems yourself before looking at the posted solution.  You cannot learn the subject without going through these exercises.  Since we will be continually building on what we have learned in earlier chapters, it is imperative that you keep up with the schedule!  Otherwise, your confusion (and dislike of physics) will grow like a snowball as the semester advances.

(3) Ask questions both inside and outside the classroom.  Come to the office hours of the Professor and the TA’s.  Take advantage of the Slawsky Clinic.  Their hours for Physics 122 are everyday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
