1) Because of the lateness in posting the HW6 solution, Quiz 5 on Ch. 20 material is postponed to Tuesday March 31. 2) Note correction on the course schedule: To adhere to the same weekly routine, the due dates of HW7, 8, 9 should remain to be on tuesdays, and the quizzes on the corresponding materials are on thursdays of the same week. Thus HW 7 is due on Tuesday March 31, Quiz 6 on Ch 21 material is on Th Apr 2, HW8 is due on Tu Apri 7, Quiz 7 on Ch. 22 material is on Th April 9, HW9 is due on Tu April 14 and Quiz 8 on Ch. 23 material is on Th April 16.

Tue Mar 24

Reminder: Quiz 5 given on March 26 is on materials in Chapter 20.

Sat Mar 7

Midterm Exam Review on March 10 in class: The Prof has selected the following problems from each chapter for the purpose of reviewing the materials. Prateek will select 10-12 of them to go over with you on Tuesday's lecture . You will benefit more if you look over these problems and attempt solving them beforehand. These problems tend to be slightly more challenging than the quizzes so as to get you better prepared for the exam.

Ch. 14 # 22, 27, 34, 44, 50
Ch. 15 # 5, 8, 10, 25, 33
Ch. 16 # 5, 8, 17, 26, 34
Ch. 17 # 8, 15, 26, 30, 33
Ch. 18 # 19, 24, 29, 45, 48
Ch. 19 # 12, 13, 23, 27, 33

Quizzes will include the materials from the chapters and sections covered by the homework due on tuesday of that week. E.g, Quiz 2 on Feb 19 is on Chapter 15, Quiz 3 on Feb 26 is on Chap 16, Quiz 4 on Mar 5 is on Ch. 18 and Ch. 19 Sec 1-4.

It was brought to our attention that the graph in Problem 16 of Chapter 15 is different between the hardcover and the softcover books, and in turn different from the instructors version at the Slawsky Clinic. You can ignore the graph in the books and plot it yourself from the given form of the traveling wave. Part a) of this problem is modified as follows:

a) Plot the snapshot graphs at t=1/4 sec (solid line), t=0 sec (dotted line) and t=1/8 sec (dashed line)

I thank Naomi Frank for noticing this discrepancy.
Wed Feb 11

There is a small change in the progression of topics in the course content: We'll discuss Ch. 17 material after Chapters 18 and 19 This comes from a meeting of the professors of Physics 122 yesterday. The new timetable is updated in the Lecture Schedule

Wed Feb 11

HW submission in class:
This is what the professor said at the end of the last lecture:

"You can hand in your homework before the class starts -- place them on the table on the podium according to the sections,-- but please return to your seat once the lecture starts."

Wed Feb 4

1) There will not be a quiz on Feb 5. It will be given a week later, on Feb 12 (still on Chapter 14 material).
The reason is because more students seem to prefer having a quiz AFTER they have worked on the homework and have a chance to study the solutions (posted after the lecture on due date). The timetable in the handout was set up under the philosophy that the quizzes serve the function of prompting the students to keep pace with the lectures and working on homework problems along with the readings. It is perhaps more idealistic than practical. This revised option seems better because you may feel more confident about it.
Quizzes are for 15 min given at the end of thursday's lectures from Feb 12 onwards, except the weeks of the three exams. Their nature is similar to the assigned homework problems. They are in closed book with no formula sheet allowed.

2) Because of this there is a revision on the Quiz schedule as reflected in the course schedule.

The quiz component of the course grade composition is revised accordingly, as noted in the organization details.
Quizzes: Best 9 out of 10 (9%) plus attendance of sections (1%) = 10%
