Overview of Mailing Lists

Subscribing/Unsubscribing

The department maintains a number of mailing lists in order to contact people in a cost-effective and timely manner. As the department provides to everyone associated with it an email account, it also requires that you be subscribed to the appropriate mailing lists based on your affiliation with the department. Most of the departmental mailing lists are closed with respect to subscribing and unsubscribing, if you are affiliated with the department you will automatically be placed on the appropriate list.

However, mistakes do unfortunately occur from time to time, and if you feel that you are incorrectly placed on a mailing list, or incorrectly omitted from a mailing list, please contact the appropriate people below depending on your affiliation with the department. Please mention what your affiliation with the department is, whether you want to be subscribed or unsubscribed, and any other relevant information to help us process your request. E.g., if you believe you are wrongly receiving mail from us, please include a copy of the mail you received. If you believe you are wrongly not receiving mail, please mention some emails that you did not receive that you think you should have.

If you are a list manager, please see page on list management for information on how to subscribe/unsubscribe people.

For security reasons, the detailed list of departmental Mailing lists is access restricted; you must provide a valid Glue login id and password to view it.

A few lists are more open, and you may be able to subscribe to or unsubscribe from freely. Some may not even require association with the university or department. The following is not a complete or up-to-date list, and it is recommended that you visit the campus listserv to obtain a more complete list of departmental and campus mailing lists which are open to the public. All public lists should be listed on that page. To subscribe or unsubscribe from on of the lists listed on that page, follow the link for the mailing list, and then click on the link labelled Join or Leave the list. You can also use that to change settings on an existing subscription (e.g. to change to digest mode, etc.). You can also review archived messages of the list.

Posting

To discourage various abuses of the departmental lists (spam, virus laden emails, inappropriate postings), posting to most departmental lists is restricted. A number of people in the department and assorted campus offices have been given permission to post to the lists. Starting in August 2005, we are migrating from the campus majordomo system to the campus listserv system, and you should send your email to get posted to addresses of the form LISTNAME@umd.edu, as opposed to the old LISTNAME@majordomo.umd.edu.

If you are authorized to post to the list in question, mail sent to the above address should get delivered to the list, and you will receive a confirmation email from the listserv program to that effect. If you are not authorized to post, or there is a problem with your email address, your submission will be held for review by own of the managers of the list, who will determine whether it meets the criteria for the list and if so will issue a command to have that one message posted. This will not alter your authorization to post to the lists in general.

If you need to post regularly to the departmental lists, or feel you should be on the list of authorized posters, please contact the Chair's Office, stating your reasons for such authorization and which lists you need to post to, and your request will be evaluated.

Please note that because of the fussiness of the server about the of your email address, it may not be possible to get things configured correctly until after one or two attempts to post fail (the list managers should be able to see to it that the posting goes through anyway in such cases). For example, while the email addresses spamme@umd.edu, spamme@glue.umd.edu, and spamme@physics.umd.edu may all be valid email addresses for you, the listserv will treat them as separate people, and each will need to be authorized separately if used as a From address when sending mail to the list. So, if you change your email address or even your email software your "authorization" may become invalid and you will need to request it again. We ask you patience with this potential nuissance, which usually happens at most once when you first subscribe, as these restrictions really do filter out a lot of spam and inappropriate email to the lists.

To expedite your request for authorization, you can enter your normal email software and send email to listserv@listserv.umd.edu with a body of code_block_it(subscribe phys-post) This will generate a request for authorization, and if done from your normal email client the of the email address should be correct. Note that while a mailto link is provided above, that might not go through your normal email client, and it is recommended that you actually open your email client and send the mail from that.
