Announcements for Physics 373 (Prof. Agashe) –
Fall 2015
(1). Final exam results:
(i)
Solutions are posted here.
(ii) The average was (about) 36 out of maximum
possible of 60, with a standard deviation of (about) 14: see plot here.
(2). HW 13 (last one!)
has been assigned here
and is due
Thursday, December 10 during lecture or in folder near Rm. 3118
of PSC by 5 pm.
(3). HW
2 through 13 solutions have been posted here.
(4). Final exam:
(i) It is on December
14 (Monday), 8.00 am.-10.00 am. in usual lecture
room (Toll 1204).
(ii) It will be cumulative, i.e., covering the material in all of the HW’s (#2 through 13).
(iii) It
is a closed book/notes exam. No crib/formula
sheet will be allowed: instead, most formula
you need will be provided on the
exam cover page: a
sample one is here.
(Note
that the formula on actual exam might
be different than above.)
(iv). Of
course, you are expected to know the meaning of each formula on cover page
e.g., R(z0) is residue of a function at z0;
results such as for f(x) being odd, we only get Fourier sine series
(which follow from the formulae given above); and
simple mathematical steps such as integral of sin is –cos.
(v).
There will be (roughly) 6 problems, each with a few parts.
(vi). A review of the associated
material is here
(but it cannot be brought to the exam).
(vii) A brief review for it (with emphasis on topics covered after 2nd
exam) will be held during the last
lecture on Thursday,
December 10.
(viii) As per the policy laid out
at the start of the course, here will not be a make-up final exam for those who miss it on December 14, unless
there is a (very) strong, well-documented reason (such as a medical emergency).
(5).
Course evaluations are to be completed here by December (thank you for your feedback!).
(6). Final letter grading scheme: I will
not be
assigning any letter grades
at this stage of the course, i.e., it will happen only at end. Roughly/tentatively, the
scheme will be that the top 25% or 30 % of the class (based on total score at
the end of the course) will get A grade (irrespective of whether these students get above 70 or
80 etc. out of 100); next 25 or 30 % will get B grade etc.
(7). 2st midterm
results:
(i). The exams not picked-up in lecture are in the usual box
near my office.
(Please
check that your HW and exam scores were recorded correctly on ELMS.)
(ii). The
average was (about) 31 out of maximum possible of 40, with a standard deviation
of (about) 9: see plot here.
(iii)
Solutions are posted here.
As
usual, please take a careful look at them before you come to me (or TA) with
questions about the grading. (Once again, note that you were expected to show details of
derivation and to clearly explain your answers, especially for "yes/no"
type questions in order to get full credit .)
(8). 1st midterm result:
(i). The average was (about) 30 out of maximum possible of
45, with a standard deviation of 9: see plot here.
However,
this is subject
to change, depending on your performance.
(9). The
schedule/location of office hours is as follows (they are also listed on course
webpage):
(i)
By instructor:
Tuesday
2.30-3.30 pm. in Rm. 1303 (note not 1304!) of Toll building
Thursday 3-4 pm. in Rm. 3118 of PSC
(ii) By TA:
Monday:
3-4 pm. in Rm. 3101 of Toll building
Wednesday:
12-1 pm. in Rm. 1304 (note not 1303!) of Toll building
Please
note location and day carefully. The ones in Rm.1303 and1304 of Toll building (which are actually
small classrooms) will
be sort of informal discussion
sessions, i.e., you are not required to attend them, but it will be useful to do
so!
